ABOUT THE BOOK

The island keeps
what it takes.

History remembers two atomic bombs.
This ship was carrying a third.

July, 1945

A secret U.S. Navy mission is transporting an undisclosed atomic weapon across the Pacific — insurance in case anything happens to the two bombs already bound for Japan.

When a Japanese air raid cripples the ship, the survivors are forced ashore on a remote Pacific island where something is terribly wrong.

No birds. No footprints. The local guides say the island is cursed.

As American and Japanese soldiers alike begin returning from the dead, a handful of scientists, Marines, and a stranded enemy pilot must set aside a war that suddenly no longer matters.

Trapped between an unstoppable undead horde and the most destructive weapon ever created, they face an impossible choice:

Escape… or make sure nothing on the island ever leaves.

HOW THIS BOOK WAS MADE

A one-person production.

This story began as a screenplay I wrote 17 years ago—an ambitious WWII period piece that was far beyond the budget available to an unknown screenwriter.

Rather than leave it sitting in a drawer, I found another way to direct it.

I developed the characters, sets, costumes, props, and visual language of the book, then constructed all 211 pages panel by panel. I used AI-generated imagery as raw material, but every panel was selected, revised, composited, and hand-finished in Photoshop. The process involved generating and reviewing roughly 15,000 images to create the individual elements I needed. As a graphic designer by trade, I handled the lighting, colour, textures, effects, continuity, lettering, and final page design myself.

Nothing in the finished book went directly from a generator to the page.

No Dawn for the Living is a one-person production: written, directed, assembled, and finished by me. It may not be the way this story was supposed to be made, but after 17 years, it is finally real.

Did you use AI?

Yes. AI-generated imagery was used as raw material during the creation of the artwork. No AI was used in the writing of the story itself.

Did AI create the finished pages?

No. Every panel was directed, selected, edited, composited, and finished manually in Photoshop. Nothing was placed into the final book untouched.

Why not hire an illustrator?

A fully illustrated 211-page WWII graphic novel would have cost far more than I could personally finance. This process allowed me to complete the story independently.

What did you create yourself?

I wrote the book and developed its characters, environments, costumes, props, compositions, pacing, lettering, effects, and page layouts. I also performed the final editing and finishing work on every page.
